Mobile Must-Haves 2026: 7 Apps That Replace 30 Native Ones

The average phone holds 80+ apps. The truth: 7 will cover 90% of daily friction better than the bloated defaults from Apple/Google/Samsung. After 6 months replacing native apps one by one, here are the survivors.

TL;DR (cross-platform iOS + Android)

  1. Browser: Arc Search (iOS) or Firefox Klar (Android privacy)
  2. Mail: Spark Mail (faster than Gmail/Apple Mail)
  3. Files: Documents by Readdle (best file manager iOS)
  4. Calendar: Cron / Notion Calendar (now free with Notion)
  5. Notes: Bear (iOS exclusive) or Obsidian (cross-platform)
  6. Photos: Mylio Photos or PhotoSync (private backup, no Google Photos lock-in)
  7. Authenticator: Microsoft Authenticator or Bitwarden

1. Arc Search (iOS, free) / Firefox Klar (Android, free) 9.0/10

Arc Search collapses 5 browser tabs into 1 AI-summarized page. Firefox Klar = privacy-first, blocks trackers, auto-cleared. Stop using Safari/Chrome default.

2. Spark Mail (cross-platform, free + Pro 5 USD/m) 9.2/10

Unified inbox, smart inbox priorities, snooze, send-later, follow-up reminders. Replaces Gmail + Apple Mail.

3. Documents by Readdle (iOS, free) 8.5/10

iOS file management was an afterthought until iOS 14. Documents adds VPN-friendly downloads, video player, file conversion, archive extraction.

4. Cron Calendar (cross-platform, free) 9.0/10

Acquired by Notion 2022, now Notion Calendar. Faster than Apple Calendar, beautiful timezone handling, integrates with Notion databases.

5. Bear (iOS exclusive, free + Pro 15 USD/year) 9.3/10 OR Obsidian (cross-platform, free) 9.5/10

Bear: gorgeous Markdown notes, hashtag-organized, iOS-only. Obsidian: vault on device + sync, no lock-in, plugin ecosystem powerful.

6. Mylio Photos (cross-platform, free + Pro 99 USD/year) 8.7/10

Local-first photo library. No Google Photos / iCloud Photos lock-in. Family-shared albums on local network.

7. Microsoft Authenticator (cross-platform, free) 9.5/10

See our 2FA article. MS Authenticator is the best free TOTP app.

What we removed

  • Default browser (Safari / Chrome)
  • Default mail (Apple Mail / Gmail)
  • Default calendar (replaced with Cron)
  • Note-taking native apps (Notes.app, Samsung Notes)

Setup tips

  • iCloud / Google account: keep for sync, not as primary.
  • Permissions audit: every 6 months, settings -> Privacy -> review which apps have location, photos, microphone access. Remove permissions of apps you don’t actively use.
  • Backup: use a local-first approach (Mylio Photos + Obsidian vault) instead of cloud lock-in.
