NordVPN is the best-known VPN brand for a reason: huge server network, fair pricing, double-VPN for paranoid use cases. Best value-for-money VPN at scale. Slightly less privacy-radical than ProtonVPN
Score: 8.7
ExpressVPN is our second recommendation in the VPN category, after NordVPN. Both are excellent. The decision between them is essentially a question of priorities: pure speed (ExpressVPN wins narrowly)
| Use case | Pick |
|---|---|
| Privacy-first (journalist, activist) | ProtonVPN Plus |
| Best speed-to-price | NordVPN |
| Streaming + travel | ExpressVPN |
| Tightest budget | Surfshark or NordVPN promo |
Yes if you use public Wi-Fi (cafe, airport, hotel), stream geo-restricted content, have an ISP that throttles or sells data, or live in a country with internet restrictions. No if you only browse trusted home Wi-Fi -- nice to have but not critical.
Free VPNs make money by selling data or showing aggressive ads. Two acceptable free options: ProtonVPN Free (rate-limited but real privacy) or Cloudflare WARP (limited features, decent privacy). Avoid all others.
Typically 10-40% bandwidth reduction depending on server distance. Local server ~5-10% loss; same continent ~15-25%; transatlantic ~30-40%. For 4K streaming, gaming, video calls: still fast enough. For day-trading: choose closer servers.
VPN hides your traffic from ISP and Wi-Fi snoops. It does NOT make you anonymous from the websites you visit (they still see your VPN IP) or from law enforcement under valid legal process. For full anonymity use Tor (slower, more limitations).
WireGuard (modern default, fast, low CPU). OpenVPN (older, more configurable, slower). Lightway (ExpressVPN proprietary, fast, battery-friendly mobile). For most users: pick WireGuard or your VPN's modern protocol.
